I did something this morning I have not done in sometime. Stranded at my Mother's house with no INTERNET, I watched Sports Center. In between talking up Danika Patrick and how she finished 8
th in the Indy 500 (I don't even know if they said who won...) and Barry Bonds first HR since the start of May, the big story on ESPN was their "EXCLUSIVE" face blacked out interview with a dog fighting source.
I have not mentioned this Vick thing yet here in The Bloghouse. For one, people get plenty of it everywhere. For the other, I'm sick of talking and hearing about the idiots of the NFL. I guess I did mention when Clinton Portis opened his mouth and by the way, when I seen a snippet of video on ESPN this morning he did not appear to have the big evil belly laugh to go with what he said the way they made it appear in print. I did not see the whole bit though, he may have looked like Snidely Whiplash at some point.
Anyway...back to the babble. They had their black faced source and undercover cop on with a segment from "Outside the Lines." Here are some snippets from the interview with the source. When reading this use a deep, disguised, hard to understand voice in your head to get full effect...
"He's a pit bull fighter," the source said of Vick. "He's one of the ones that they call 'the big boys': that's who bets a large dollar. And they have the money to bet large money. As I'm talking about large money -- $30,000 to $40,000 -- even higher. He's one of the heavyweights."
"I've fought dogs, I pitted them, I bred them and I've done everything with them," said the source of his three decades in dog fighting. He then went on to describe the scene from that night seven years ago, as he took his 42-pound dog into the pit (the area dogs fight in) to face off against Vick's dog. He says Vick did not get into the pit but had a member of his entourage handle his dog while Vick placed bets with the 20 or so people in attendance.
"Then he started, you know, waving money," the source said. "He was betting with everybody … He said he got $5,000. He said he's betting on his animal."
The story did swing into talking about how there is a list of several NFL players that are suspected of being involved in dog fighting...long black cloaks and kool-aid from the way they make it sound. This is a good point in the story where they could have went with more of the culture in the south that deems the fighting acceptable but chose to make it sound as if NFL players thought the thing up.
On a side note...the source is an idiot...
"Dog fighting is a very private thing," answers the source, who said that Vick was still involved in dog fighting as recently as last year. "It's all Pit Bull Men. It's close knit: you got your little boys, then you got your heavyweight boys. It's a completely different class … And now [that] it's all over the media, and you have to keep it more private."
The source said he consented to our interview to change people's perceptions about dog fighting because they have "the wrong idea" about it and should see "just one" match for themselves before judging it. "They'll let this other thing go -- what is it called? UFC [Ultimate Fighting Championship]?" he asked. "That is every bit as bad -- you know, that's terrible. But then you have thousands of people that cheer, rah, rah, and they really love that. You see guys get their heads busted, you know, and they get their arms messed up, their legs twisted almost off. But then they fuss over this here, is wrong."
"They shouldn't be really upset, OK?" he said. "Because it's only just an animal. It's just a dog that is raised up. He's put out there, you know, and he's chained up, OK. And the time he gets a certain age, this dog is going to want to fight. It is bred in him, OK? He knows what he is and he's going to fight. Just take him off the leash, let him go."
Small difference there...these guys choose to get in the cage. I'll repeat the same thing that Mixed Martial Arts backers are trying to get through thick skulls everywhere..."It's safer than boxing."
Anyway, back to the babble... I thought the Falcons response was a little comical.
Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts responded via e-mail, "Michael was drafted by the Falcons in 2001. The allegations regarding him are still under investigation, and until we have facts related to the investigation, we are unable to respond further."
I think this is funny because the first thing stated is when Vick was drafted. Why? Because the video that is supposed to be out there that has Vick betting on dogs is from 2000. They want to get it out there ASAP that he was not a Falcon at the time. That is a little funny...isn't it?
Bottom line is Vick is no better than these other guys that are being suspended and I hope he gets his. Goodell has shown that you don't get grandfathered in to his new policy because the guys getting the spanking now had messed up before (and some after...idiots) the policy was in place. I back U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) on his stance with Vick in his letter to Goodell.
"The level of cruelty involved in exploiting animals to the point that 60 malnourished and injured dogs were removed from Mr. Vick's property is mind boggling," Lantos said."I will view anything less than the strongest repudiation of Mr. Vick's involvement as tacit support for this atrocious activity."
