More NFL Jabber 5/31/07
Looks like the UFL needs seven more rich guys to make a league. Mark Cuban is the only one reported to be on board so far and they are looking at 8 teams.
Cuban had some opinions he shared on his blog regarding the subject HERE.
"I thought it was great for him to take the time to stop by here and talk to our guys," coach Gary Kubiak said. "It's amazing looking in the faces of those young players and the intrigue and what he's accomplished.
"The thing that I got out of it is he talked about passion, he talked about commitment and he talked about being a good guy. Those are things we talk about all the time, but when somebody like that stops by here and echoes those remarks that is as powerful as it gets. I'm just very appreciative that he came by."
Larry Zierlein is doing what we all do when we send porn to someone we didn't plan to in our contacts...tell them it was spam. Seriously though he is stepping up (if you get any from me though it was sent to me as spam)."It was 100 percent unintentional,'' Zierlein said yesterday, speaking publicly for the first time about his embarrassing mistake. "I don't even know how to mass email, I don't know these machines very good -- just a 100 percent unintentional thing. I hit the wrong button."

Realfootball365 seems to think this may be Losman's year as well.
The Texans are trying some new things at Free Saftey."They all have to improve at getting turnovers," defensive backs coach Jon Hoke said. "We have not been very good at that. With Glenn and C.C., you have two guys that are physical guys and can tackle and will hit people and those types of things. But they both understand we need to find ways to get our hands on the ball and create more turnovers."
"This has been in the works for three years," said Garcia's father, Bob, a former junior-college football coach. "There was always something in the way. The money. The salary cap. This and that.
"Now Jeff has the opportunity he always wanted, to play for this coach. I can't wait. As far as I'm concerned, I say, 'It's about time.' "

Cam Cameron wants to remind everyone that they used the #9 pick on a kick returned and not a WR as they await the arrival of Ted Ginn Jr. "He's allowed to have playbooks and that kind of stuff," Cameron said. "He's coming here as a returner first. He'll need to do a lot of studying for that. And then a receiver and he'll learn. Like I said, we've been through this with other guys."

Pete Prisco wants to remind everyone that Mario Williams is going to be a stud.
Would someone please just trade for Trent Green already?!? His agent won't return the Fins calls.
Face value (like that will stay the same by noon today) for a 2011 Super Bowl ticket is $900.
Roman Harper is ready to comeback in New Orleans. Can you "comeback" when you barely started?
Big Ben wants the no huddle...and it appears they are going to give it to him.
"I like the way he wants to run the no-huddle," Roethlisberger said. "Last year, we talked and talked and talked about doing it and never did it. We did it in the preseason against coach [Mike] Tomlin and Minnesota -- we marched down the field and I was done for the rest of the game. It was great. And then we never saw it.
"I like that he wants to do that and I truly believe this year that we will do it."
The Dolphins have signed Lorenzo Booker.
Sean Payton has put a smackdown on the rumors that Will Smith is bitching about his contract.
Marvin Lewis is saying he is sorry for basically accusing the Cincy cops of chasing Bengals.
"Yesterday, I gave a radio interview and made some comments that did not illustrate the high regard I have for the Cincinnati Police Department. I apologize that what I said did not reflect my true feelings," Lewis said.
The Cards are happy with the turnout for camp. Edge James had some family bidness to tend to.

Drew Brees continues with his good deeds in New Orleans. Brees and some teammates took 31 New Orleans area kids on a fishing trip that began with a limo ride.
"Most kids have not really been able to have that experience," said Brees, who came up with the idea for "Brees on the Seas" back when he was with the San Diego Chargers. "Especially when you're talking about Children's Hospital. Some of them might be terminally ill with cancer, and it might be their only opportunity to do this."Sometimes the best treatment is just to get them out here and put a smile on their face. Sometimes that's the best therapy, to get them away from the treatments and the medicine and the doctors. Give them a place where they can just relax and forget about that for a while and just catch fish."

NFL Jabber 4/28/07-Draft Day
The best move for the Lions could be to grab Calvin Johnson if he is there at #2 and look for teams to make offers that want him. Worst thing that could happen is they end up with the best player in the draft.
It's reported the 49'ers are close to a deal for Seahawks WR Darrell Jackson.
The Titans are kicking up the effort to snag Chargers RB Michael Turner today."On Friday the Titans and Chargers discussed scenarios including a swap of first-round picks today, with the Titans also giving up a fourth-round pick. The Titans are scheduled to pick 19th overall, the Chargers 30th.
But the Titans might have competition for Turner. ESPN reported an unidentified team offered San Diego a first-round pick in the 2008 draft, and that the Chargers thought it was an acceptable offer."
Unless that trade for Lance Briggs goes through, the Redskins are expected to stay where they are at #6, which is a pretty good spot to be in considering their needs.
The Seahawks are looking at going "Best Player Available" today. "
How he plays on Saturdays, how he performs in big games, how he performs against higher-level competition, that is really what matters most," vice president of player personnel Ruston Webster said this week. "The guy's résumé is the film."
The trade talks of Kris Jenkins going from the Panthers to the Rams looks like it will come down to the wire if it happens on draft day.

Peterson could make 1/2 of scary duo
Last season the Saints had no choice but to take Reggie Bush when he fell to the #2 spot the night before the draft. Bush made the perfect sidekick to Deuce McAllister in the new Saints offense. The pairing worked perfectly because Bush did not take away from the bread and butter running of Deuce. He was used more to spell McAllister, decoy, and in the passing game.
This season a team that seems to have their #1 running back could face a decision if Adrian Peterson falls to them. Peterson is a different type of RB but teams are leaning more toward the running back by committee approach. Peterson has been projected to go anywhere from 3# to the Browns all the way to #12 with the Bills. The reason for the big gap is that many of those teams appear to be set, or at least manageable at the RB position. Let's have a look at what kind of pairings could develop if someone did pull the trigger. (No, I'm not always addressing teams needs, I'm talking about if it were to happen.)
Raiders
With the glaring needs in other positions it won't happen. Beyond the other needs, the signing of Dominic Rhoads and the current starter LaMont Jordan would make it too crowded.
Lions
It could have happened here but the Lions went out and got T.J. Duckett and Tatum Bell to carry the rock while Kevin Jones is recovering.
Browns
Easily the first place it could happen. Don't let the Jamal Lewis signing fool you. He is not the long term, or possibly even the short term answer. It may be the perfect situation for Peterson to share the load with Lewis in his first season. Many rookie RB's run out of gas toward the end of their first season.
Bucs
This would be a long shot since the Bucs have Caddy Williams on the squad and he was picked just two years ago. Granted, he had somewhat of a bomb of a season last year but two top 5 RB's in three drafts isn't likely. It could make for a nice pairing though.
Cardinals
The Edge would not be happy but this is a tasty scenerio as well. James is getting older but thinks he is going to play forever so it wouldn't make for a pretty locker room. If they got past that though you could have another reason to think this will be the breakout year for the Cards offense.
Redskins
Another crowded backfield. The Skins like Ladell Betts but could move him on draft day if they wanted to make room for Peterson. Don't think it will happen but Peterson and Portis would make a nice pairing.
Vikings
This is actually another projected spot for Peterson to fall. Chester Taylor had a decent season but he isn't the home run hitting franchise back that Peterson will be. The Vikings have not had THE guy since Robert Smith retired.
Falcons
Jerious Norwood had a decent rookie campaign last season. Peterson coming to Atlanta would give them the significant threat at the position though. They say they want to pound the ball and this could do it.
Dolphins
Like the Bucs, you don't take two RB's in the top 10 in three years. Pairing Peterson with Ronnie Brown could be interesting. Ricky Williams coming back could make for a crowded backfield but trading him away could make room for Peterson. Longest shot since the raiders in my eyes.
Texans
Another landing spot for Peterson on many mock drafts. Like the Browns, the Texans went out and got an RB in free agency in Ahman Green. Call me crazy but I think that Kubiak guy has been know to use more than one RB in Denver. I would love to see this be the place for Peterson to fall and that is because I want to see the Texans succeed.
49'ers
Frank Gore came out like a warrior last season. Not a logical choice at all but what a scary duo it would make .
Bills
No team needs Peterson more than the Bills. McGahee is gone and Anthony Thomas has not been the answer since his rookie season. The Bills would be blessed if Peterson somehow fell this far.

Al Wilson has been cut loose in Denver. Shame.
"My time is up as a Bronco," the eight-year veteran said. "It's time to move forward and try something else. You have to do what's best for your organization, just like a Fortune 500 company. Sometimes you have to let good employees go."
A sense of humor can go a long way in any field. Ken Whisenhunt cracked me up with a comment after the first practices in AZ.
"I don't know where to stand on the field," Whisenhunt said of the first of two practices Friday. "It's exciting, but it's different."
As practices start for Miami, the time is now for Daunte Culpepper to get a head start on the QB job. He however is not participating in mini-camp since his latest surgery.
Anthony Wright is the newest New York Giant. Wright agreed to a two-year deal.
David Carr has drive again in Charlotte. I really hope this guy gets his chance to show he can play on a different team.
"Honestly in the last five years we haven't had much spark. If we were stuck in the forest it would be hard to light a fire with what we had going on.'' "It's funny, the day I was signed by Carolina, I was throwing balls the next day. I've never done that before,'' Carr said. "I was out there throwing a ball for two or three hours and I couldn't really explain it except I was excited to get a new opportunity and a chance to show what I can do.''
The Texans are looking in their backyard for a backup QB. University of Houston Alum Kevin Kolb will meet with the team before the draft.
Keith Brooking has said before that he isn't a MLB...the Falcons tell him he is.

Charlie Weis is campaigning for Brady Quinn to be in Cleveland."It's a match made in heaven," Weis said Thursday by phone. "What more can you ask for? It seems to me to make too much sense. Hopefully, common sense will prevail and they'll draft him."
"You can't pick a guy just because he's always rooted for your team, but Brady has everything it takes to be a franchise quarterback for a long time -- and he loves the Browns," said Weis. "He's as passionate about the team as the fans are -- and I've experienced the Dawg Pound, so I know."
Michael Silver at SI.com has a "Ultimate Mock Draft" up. The clever idea has what he thinks each team in the draft would do if they could pick from any NFL player. I have heard of things like this before but they were called "Fantasy Mock Drafts."
Speaking of Fantasy Football, John Juhasz at Foxsports.com goes out on a limb to say that best rookie RB's in the draft to make a fantasy impact are Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch.
Tom Curran at NBCSports.com runs down his thoughts on the top ILB's in the draft.
The Texans continue with offseason moves signing Andre' Davis at WR.
The Saints have signed David Patton. Given the team effort they look for rather than the big name, he could be a good fit in the New Orleans offense.
If you judge by snaps at practice, Chris Simms is the starting QB in Tampa...for now.
"As far as who's starting, I'm not worried about it. It's a competition with myself just to see how good I can be," Simms said. "[But] I have been getting a good amount of the first-team reps."

The NFL is set to release it's schedule today...finally!
"On Wednesday at 1 p.m. Eastern, everything about the 2007 NFL schedule will be revealed. The schedule release day is becoming more and more like an unofficial holiday every spring. ESPN and The NFL Network each have two-hour specials. Fans have opportunities to study their schedule and map out their falls, particularly if they plan to travel to a few road games of their favorite teams."
Rick Maese of The Baltimore Sun plays a game of "what if" regarding the new Commish's hard hand on the bad boys. Maese goes back to the Ray Lewis starring on Court T.V. days and ponders what may have been had Lewis got the wrath that Pacman and Henry did from the league.
Mike Williams and Josh McCown played hooky from the voluntary mini-camp. Both players have been rumored to be in trade talks.
The Vikings had 25 players in for pre-draft visits yesterday.
Is it Johnson...is it Russell? Only Kiffen and his staff know. "

Packers LB Nick Barnett gives props to the team for taking care of it's own (him) instead of shopping for free agents.
"I think that's normal," Ted Thompson said of investing mostly in his own. "A lot of teams try to do that. From a timing standpoint, this was just a good time. It was good for the player and good for the club."
The Washington Post has a section on the Ravens but has had the same story for the headlines since March 10th when Willis McGahee made his first public appearance.
Deuce McAllister wants more in 2007. I would say that 1000 yards is decent when having to share the load with a #2 pick. Deuce isn't complaining about that though, he wants more out of himself.
"There were some things I knew I could do well, and sometimes some things that didn't feel as good," McAllister said Tuesday during a break from the team's offseason conditioning program. "The doctors and trainers did a great job. But probably the thing that I wanted, probably more personal than anything, I just want some of those 60- and 70-yard runs again. That's the ultimate goal."
Houston is the new Gothem City with Ahman Green in town.
"They see me out here running, so they know I am Batman, but I am human," said Green, who earned his nickname because of his lifelong infatuation with the comic book hero. "I can get broken down, and the first day of running definitely did that. But that's what we work hard for, and that's what our goal is: to work hard and be contenders in the AFC South."
Pacman and Henry got theirs...what about Tank Johnson? He may have to wait until he is out of jail to get his.

The is a good article at The Washington Post on London Fletcher and the obstacles overcome. I love these stories. I get sick of hearing about the Pacman's.
"It slaps us in the face," said Gregg Williams, the Redskins' assistant head coach-defense. "He's had just horrible tragedy," added Dick Vermeil, Fletcher's first head coach in professional football. Only Fletcher will not frown along with them, his voice will not harden. Everything he has become is because of where he had been and the fact he had been able to break away when others never could."I think of my story as inspirational," he said. "If I can help one kid who may be going through the same things I did, then it is worth telling."
"To be honest, some of these (visiting players), we really, really like," Linehan said. "The rest of the them are a mixed bag. There's medical re-checks that we need on some players. And there were pro-day conflicts with some where we're really just getting more information on players."
Peter Sirmon has a one-year offer on the table from the Cardinals.
Mike Shanahan has signed a three-year extension with the Broncos. This guys has only had one losing season with the team.
The Colts are looking for another RB to replace Dominic Rhoads. Kevin Barlow is on the list of "talked to."
David Carr says he is okay with the backup job in Charlotte.
"I'm excited about the opportunity in Carolina," he said. "They've got a great team -- good offensive line, good receiving corps, solid defense ... Pat Hill (Carr's coach at Fresno State) and (Panthers coach) John Fox have been friends for a long time, and I know he's a great coach."

David Carr has agreed to be the backup in Carolina. Some may wonder how long the word "backup" will be used though as it has been said they wanted someone to push Jake D. for the job.
Pats tagged CB, Asante Samuel may ask to be traded.
“This is to let everybody know that I’m not happy anymore and things are not going well,” Samuel said. “At first I thought it was going well, but it’s not. We have a difference of opinion in my value. They think I’m worth one price and the other teams think I’m worth a lot more. If a long-term deal can’t be done at fair numbers for me and New England, then I want to be traded.”
Jeff Fisher will have four guys ducking it out for one safety spot this spring. Lamont Thompson, Calvin Lowry, Vincent Fuller and Bryan Scott will all be trying to get the starting SS position next to Chris Hope.
"What we want to do is bring experience and depth to the position and open it up for competition," Fisher said. "One would assume it's going to be difficult to unseat Chris. Chris returns as the starter. But as far as the other position, we will open it up and see what happens."
Patrick Crayton is looking to stay with the cowboys, signing a $1.3 Million contract. Seems like such a small number doesn't it? What this mere mortal would give for that though...
Barry Sanders will face off with Jim Brown in a charity golf tournament.
The Colts are making their trip to the White House on April 23.
Champ Bailey thinks with the addition of Bly the Broncos have the best CB tandem in the league.

So the pissing match with the Redskins and Bears over Lance Briggs continues. The Skins shot down the Bears counter offer. First the Skin offered to swap 1st rounders (Bears get 6th for 31st) and Skins get Briggs. The Bears counter and want LB Rocky McIntosh too because he has such a cool name...Skins say no way. I'm not thinking they are done yet, stay tuned...
Like watching hot, sweaty, competitive women? The Charger Girls auditions would have been the place for you. More than 400 showed up for 28 spots.
Top news in Dallas is that Terrell Owens is going to join the rest of the team in learning the new offense this season.
Brodie Croyel is set to get started on winning the Chiefs QB job.
“It makes you even more eager and more excited about what’s fixing to happen,” Croyle said. “They’re not guaranteeing me anything. They’ve just said they’re going to give me a shot. If I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go. My whole thought is that I’m going to be ready to go and have the best offseason and minicamp and training camp I can possibly have. I want to give them no reason to think anything but that I’m ready to go.”
Speaking of QB's ready to go with a new job, Matt Schaub is going to start playing catch with Andre Johnson in Houston today. The two have already began to form the QB/WR bond and Johnson already seems sweet on Schaub.
"Just from looking at him and looking at the way he walks around the locker room and things like that, you can tell he's a leader," Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson said. "That's something you want to have at the quarterback position."

NFL Jabber 3/30/07
The Panthers are talking to reps of both David Carr and Joey Harrington about the backup QB role. Now personally I think David Carr would be the better option but I don't want to see him there. I think the kid can start in this league yet and would like to see him get the chance. If he were to end up in Oakland he would be used to spending time on his back. Maybe the best fit would be in Detroit. Let him hang out behind Kitna if he has to be a backup, the job would eventually be his. The Browns could be an option and they have the weapons. Time will tell. There isn't much talk about him compared to Trent Green with these other teams....shame.
Trent Green's agent says that he has only talked to the Dolphins. Word has been that the Browns and Lions have been in the mix. Sounds like a friend trying to reassure the popular girl that his buddy only wants to hook up with her and isn't scamming other chicks.
Word is that Peyton Manning's monologue was supposed to slam Tom Brady's baby making. It got pulled. Happy to hear it. Getting personal like that would not have been funny to me, although I'm sure some would have found humor in it. I can take Manning pummeling some United Way kids but the jab at Brady would have been too much.
Manning's monologue, told a story about visiting a Boston veterans hospital and being taunted by a Pats fan named Joe O’Malley. “What do Tom Brady and the circus have in common?” Peyton said Joe asked him. “They both have two more rings than you.” According to writer Dan Shanoff, that was not how the joke originally went. In the dress rehearsal, Burlington homegal Amy Poehler was dressed in a Pats jersey and she is the one who delivered the “two more rings than you” line.
To which, Peyton replied “That’s not the ONLY thing he’ll have two more of . . .”
Rumor is that USC's Dwayne Jarrett's snail like 40 time could have him falling to the second round. Poor kid. Getting compared to Mike Williams is like a QB prospect being compared to Tim Couch. (I would have said Ryan Leif but Williams isn't that much of an idiot).
With their lack of moves in free agency it appears the Packers are going to have to draft their RB next month. Chances are they will split with Vernand Morency.
Every year I feel more like the NFL is located in that dance hating town in the movie "Footloose." They are cracking down even more on the celebrations. Falcons GM Rich McKay makes a good point though...

Mike Tomlin gives an example of his aggressiveness to the class by humiliating an airline employee that had it coming. After dealing with the airline over the phone regarding his lost bag and getting nowhere, Tomlin headed to the airport to do a little schooling.
"I get over there, and they tell me the bag is not there," Tomlin was saying at breakfast yesterday morning. "I said, 'I've been talking to your call center all weekend, and they said the bag is here.'
"They said, 'I don't care what they told you on the 1-800 number, your bag isn't here.' "
He was offered a $25 voucher on his next flight for his troubles.
"Well, somewhere during the conversation, I see my bag behind her in a pile," Tomlin said. "I said, 'That's my bag!' She said, 'Sir, your bag's not here, the computer says'... I said 'I understand what the computer says, but I'm looking at my bag! It's a black bag, Pittsburgh Steelers. It's my bag.'
"So, I walk around the counter and at that point, she started to get mad. I pulled the tag off and showed her it was my bag. I had to dig it out myself."

Manny Arora, the attorney for Pacman Jones is asking to see some evidence that proves his client should be charged with the felony that police are asking for in Vegas.
"My experience tells me if they would have been independent witnesses with a good recollection and no sort of bone to pick that they (police) would have acted on this weeks ago," Arora said.

The throws he can make, I don't know if anybody else can. He can go way over there and throw the ball 70 yards back over there. That's really exciting and everything. How many times does that happen in a year? About two in 16 games. While that aspect is fun, you've got to dig deeper. That doesn't happen much. That's a scout's dream, to have a guy like that."
On Quinn...
"He's fun to watch in that situation, when they're down and he's bringing them back," Kiffin said. "He's a big-time competitor. He's fun. I've had some discussions with him.He's extremely intelligent. I'm really excited about Brady, and I like him a lot."
The Lions are jumping in the the Trent Green trade talks. That would shake things up once again in the draft given they are projected in many places to take Brady Quinn.
Mike Shanahan is chipper these days, at least he showed that when talking to the press yesterday. He covered many topics while at the meetings in Phoenix. While some questioned the Broncos signing Travis Henry when Willis McGahee and Thomas Jones were out there, Coach was high on him all along.
"Two of the guys you first mentioned there were draft choices involved. So you want to give draft choices away for a guy you can get free, that you might like more? I really thought Travis Henry was the MVP of (the Titans), that's what I thought. . . . You were able to sign a guy and not lose a draft choice. It's like getting a first rounder."
Could it be Houston fans? Could the Texans finally be looking to land a tackle in the first round? Rumor has it...
"There's a good chance; it depends on who's out there," Kubiak said about the possibility of selecting an offensive tackle first. "We have to continue to improve up there."

Sounds like Joey Porter may still be tough after all. The other guys didn't jump Jones until after Porter clocked him...giving him little chance to retaliate. Sounds like Jones buddy that was near by must have been on a hot slot machine. He witnessed it but doesn't sound like he helped. Ding, ding, ding, ding,
This isn't your early 2000's Texans anymore. Not long ago the team was "new." They turned a major corner by letting David Carr walk, he has been the face of the franchise since day one. Dominic Williams (Davis) will be cut June 1. Coach was given the boot last year. Matt Schaub and Ahman Green have already been named starters at their skill positions. Time will tell if all the changes will mean anything...
Rumors fly about the Lions #2 pick being for sale.
Trading Al Wilson is going to be a pain in the neck for the Broncos...okay, sorry, that was bad. Wilson's neck problems are holding things up for a trade to the Giants.
FB Terrell Smith passed on the Packers and signed with the Cards.
Ken Hamlin is going to be joining Roy Williams in the Cowboys defensive backfield.
Something not brought up too often yet but makes sense...what about Culpepper to the Raiders? His career is on the downside, he has a big arm. He has Raiders QB written all over him!
How many QB's can you fit in the state o Florida? The Dolphins already have Culpepper and Cleo Lemon on the roster. Now it looks like the trade for Trent Green is going to go through...and David Carr is on the radar. Sounds like a Tampa story except nobody is threatening to quit.
Speaking of Green, reports are that he wants to go to the Chiefs.
The Falcons have signed Chris Redman to back up Michael Vick.
The Seahawks will be keeping Bobby Engram on the squad.
