Two weeks ago, the lead surgeon on the Medical City Hospital transplant team assigned to former Cowboys running back Ron Springs met with organ donor Everson Walls.

"Everson, this may be something you really don't want to do," Dr. Richard Dickerman told Walls. "You may feel you've been pushed into this."

It was Dr. Dickerman's opinion that the very public handling of a very private matter -- one man's decision to be a living donor -- might have been overlooked in the feel-good story of the year involving a pair of ex-Cowboys teammates, Walls and Springs.

"If you tell me that you really don't want to go through with this, I'll give you a 'medical out'... and nobody will ever question it," Dr. Dickerman offered.

Walls thought about it for a nanosecond.

"No, Doc," he said. "I really want to do this."
